ESPN's Rich Cimini reports that former Buffalo Bills first round draft pick Aaron Maybin is expected to sign a one year deal with the New York Jets. Maybin is said to be on his way to the Jets facility for a physical after being released by the Bills earlier this week.
Maybin's story may strike some as eerily similar to that of Jets bust Vernon Gholston. Neither has recorded a sack in their NFL careers after being drafted highly, with expectations of rushing the quarterback. There has to be something Rex Ryan sees in Maybin, because in his book, "Play Like You Mean It," he says that he told Eric Mangini not to draft Gholston. I can't see Ryan then wasting his time on a true Gholston clone.
One of the problems Maybin has had in his career is keeping his weight up. He reportedly was down to 228 pounds at the start of training camp due to pneumonia, but Manish Mehta reports he is now up to 242 pounds.
The deal is expected to be a non-guaranteed contract.
I like the move. It's no risk, with the potential for a pretty decent reward. The Jets think that Maybin can be an edge rusher in the nickel package. If there is a time to take a chance on a guy like this, why not now? The Jets don't boast much as far as pure pass rushers, so if Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum strike it rich here, they can add another dimension to the defense. If not, they don't really lose anything.
Rex Ryan is known for getting the most out of his players. Let's see what he can do with Maybin.
