New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer presided over a brutal offensive performance Sunday night against the Baltimore Ravens, and earlier this week we looked at some of the issues he failed to address. While the biggest issue seemed to be an offensive line ill-equipped to deal with the Ravens defense, we will take a look at how Schottenheimer called the game on Sunday. These numbers will change as Rex Ryan has deemed it necessary for the Jets to go back to the ground and pound offense. Expect more runs to be called in the coming weeks. Past weeks: One Two Three
Here's a look at the play-calling from week four:
First Down
| Distance | Run Left | Run Middle | Run Right | Pass |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short – Three yards or less | ||||
| Medium – Four to Six Yards | 2 | |||
| Long – Seven yards or more | 3 | 5 | 2 | 9 |
| Total | 3 | 5 | 2 | 11 |
The Jets were right around even in the run/pass split on first down. Schottenheimer managed to stay pretty even in his directional running as well. The balance on first down didn't lead to much success, which led to an imbalance on later downs. Expect more running on first down as the Jets revert back to relying more on their running game in the future.
Second Down
| Distance | Run Left | Run Middle | Run Right | Pass |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short – Three yards or less | 1 | |||
| Medium – Four to Six Yards | 1 | 2 | 1 | |
| Long – Seven yards or more | 2 | 10 | ||
| Total | 1 | 5 | 11 |
The Jets didn't move the ball much on first downs, leaving them with long yardage second downs that forced Schottenheimer to put the ball in the air often. On short-to-medium second downs Schottenheimer relied on the ground game more than the pass. He even tried to use the running game a bit on long yardage second downs. He does deserve some credit for keeping the running game involved, though overall he deserves a ton of blame for the offensive futility.
| Distance | Run Left | Run Middle | Run Right | Pass |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short – Three yards or less | 1 | 1 | ||
| Medium – Four to Six Yards | ||||
| Long – Seven yards or more | 11 | |||
| Total | 1 | 12 |
The Jets ended up in a lot of third-and-long situations as a result of their inability to move the ball on early downs. Predictably, this led to the ball being put in the air the majority of the time, which made things even easier of the Ravens defense. They were allowed to be creative in attacking the struggling Jets offensive line, which meant more pressure on Mark Sanchez. The Jets did have one fourth down attempt, an incomplete pass.
Red Zone
| Run Left | Run Middle | Run Right | Pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 |
The Jets didn't spend much time in the red zone, running exactly one play inside the Baltimore 20 yard line. The play was an incomplete pass to Plaxico Burress. A penalty then backed the Jets outside the 20, with the drive ending in a Nick Folk field goal.
The offensive performance wasn't too pretty and the Jets trailed almost the whole game, leading to the pass-happy numbers. The Jets will be looking to control the game more in the coming weeks, so the ball will be in the hands of Shonn Greene and LaDainian Tomlinson more often. There's a lot of work to do for this offense, but they do get a bit of a break in one of the worst defenses in the NFL statistically this week, the New England Patriots.
