The New York Jets will have their top pass rusher back in the fold this season, as Aaron Maybin officially signed his one year restricted free agent tender worth $1.26 million today. Voluntary workouts began today, so Maybin stopped by and got his deal out of the way so he could get started on offseason conditioning with his Jets teammates.
Aaron Maybin was a Rex Ryan reclamation project in 2011 and very few thought he would end up being the leading pass rusher for the team. That's a product of Maybin's hard work as well as an illustration of the continued struggles the New York Jets have experienced in trying to pressure the quarterback.
Maybin took to Twitter to express his feelings on being back with the Jets:
Now it's time to see if Ryan can get Maybin to grow even more as a pass rusher. The Jets aren't going to be foolish and try to ask Maybin to grow his role on the team by playing him against the run as well, but if Ryan can help Maybin develop a more versatile array of pass rush moves to complement his pure speed rush on the edge he could become a very dangerous rusher.
The Jets will also be looking to upgrade their pass rush in the 2012 NFL Draft if possible, which would also serve to give Ryan more flexibility to put Maybin in situations where he can succeed.
