New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes is back at OTAs after missing time to fly to Germany and visit with U.S. troops. Holmes missed four voluntary practices during the trip, but clearly his cause is one that will excuse him from any backlash over missing practice. Holmes has been busy this offseason, with a lot of off the radar work that hasn't gotten him as much recognition as he probably deserves.
Santonio Holmes has returned to Florham Park to participate in OTAs with his New York Jets teammates after missing the past four practices to fly to Germany and spend time with U.S. troops. As always, prior to it being revealed that Holmes was going to visit troops stationed in Germany, many were quick to wonder if there was a legitimate reason for him ducking out of practices.
Holmes has done some good work this offseason, and much of it has nothing to do with playing football. He did have private workouts with Mark Sanchez and it's unclear whether he will attend Jets West, but he has made a far greater impact elsewhere. Still, it doesn't seem to change people's opinion of him for the better. As Joe Caporoso of Turn on the Jets writes:
"All the positive work that Holmes is doing doesn’t fit in the media’s narrative of him, so it doesn’t receive the attention it deserves. Instead he gets a headline on the Daily News saying “Give Me The Damn Ball!” when the quote was pulled from an anonymous source and not from him…then people like Manish Mehta wonder why they get “testy” answers from him in press conferences."
