Former New York Jets wide receiver Plaxico Burress still can't find an NFL team. Plaxico Burress has run through a list of NFL teams he would play for, seemingly naming new ones each month, and none are biting. We have continued to keep tabs on his situation and the story hasn't changed a whole lot except more teams keep being added and each new potential destination quickly denies any interest in the aging wide receiver. The most recent team to reject Plaxico Burress is the Carolina Panthers.
Former New York Jets wide receiver Plaxico Burress is still trying to latch on with an NFL team, but no one seems to be listening. Plaxico Burress has taken somewhat of an odd approach to his free agency, openly naming teams that have apparently satisfied some criteria to earn a spot on his list of desired teams. Unfortunately for him, each team he adds quickly shoots down any talk of signing Plaxico Burress.
To date no team, whether on or off his ever-growing list of acceptable destinations, has expressed any interest in signing Plaxico Burress. So far Plaxico Burress has named the Jets, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami Dolphins and Carolina Panthers as teams he would play for. Realistically, Burress is going to have to wait until someone gets to training camp and has a wide receiver go down to injury or realizes they are in desperate need of help.
It's not too tough to see why. At 35 years old, Plaxico Burress is on the downswing of his career, is far from squeaky clean, and wasn't terribly productive with the Jets last season. He doesn't have the speed to threaten teams vertically and his body language can be off-putting on the field. Add to that rumors of him being involved with the wide receiver-led mutiny against Brian Schottenheimer last season, and he is not exactly first on the list of free agent wide receivers teams want to sign.
It's also easy to see why the Carolina Panthers, the latest team Plaxico Burress has named, don't have any interest. The Panthers are a rebuilding team, with a young, impressionable quarterback in Cam Newton. Cam Newton himself has been tied to some pretty ugly stuff in the past (stealing laptops at Florida, alleged money involved in his commitment to Auburn), so the last thing Carolina wants is Plaxico Burress coming in and being a negative influence on him. Even purely on the field, the Panthers don't need Burress getting in Newton's ear about wanting the ball more.
It's worth pointing out that it's not a great market for former New York Jets wide receivers right now. Braylon Edwards is still out there and he won't be returning to the Jets. At least Braylon Edwards understands the process and is going through it with some dignity. He's not naming teams that he deems worthy of his services, instead he is waiting it out while there are some teams with possible interest (Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Texans). Plus, Braylon Edwards is coming off an injury and teams could be waiting on him to be fully healthy.
