New York Jets training camp opens on July 26th at SUNY Cortland and in the month leading up to that they have continued to tweak their 90-man roster. They recently released undrafted free agent defensive end Damon Harrison, but also parted ways with linebacker Matthias Berning who had been around the Jets for most of 2011.
After the Jets released Harrison they signed undrafted free agent defensive tackle Matt Hardison, who had some roots locally, when he had originally played at Rutgers University. Hardison had been invited to tryout with the Jets during rookie mini-camp in May. He stands six-foot four-inches, and weighs in at 285 pounds, and could give the Jets more depth in the middle in 4-3 formations. During the past week the Jets also signed wide receiver Raymond Webber, who came into the NFL last season as an undrafted free agent when he signed with Tampa Bay. He stands at six-foot, three-inches and weighs 220 pounds, but enters a logjam ahead of him at wide receiver.
In other news coming out of the Jets organized team activities (OTA's) former defensive lineman converted to offensive lineman Matt Kroul, has been taking snaps at center to possibly become the back-up to Nick Mangold. He has been doing so since the Jets do not have any other offensive lineman on the roster who has any real, regular game experience at center. When Mangold went down last season the Jets line was a mess and even after Mangold returned it took one to two weeks before they jelled back together as a cohesive unit. Hopefully Kroul will get time at center during the preseason which will give him proper feel for the speed and handling of the game at that position.
