If you ever needed proof that owning an NFL franchise is a very fruitful endeavor, Forbes Magazine has it. Forbes ranked the 50 most valuable sports franchises around the world and all 32 NFL teams made the list. The New York Jets checked in at No. 12 on the full list and are the fifth most valuable NFL franchise. The Jets are valued at $1.23 billion. MetLife Stadium is a big factor in that number.
There are several factors that go into determining the value of a sports team. Location, facilities and other variables impact how much a franchise is really worth. For the New York Jets, being in the New York/New Jersey area and having a virtually brand new stadium with a lucrative naming rights deal are big pluses. MetLife pays a pretty penny for the home of the New York Giants and New York Jets to be called MetLife Stadium.
Manchester United and Real Madrid take the top two spots, with the New York Yankees and the Dallas Cowboys tied for third on the list. The Cowboys are the first NFL team on the list, followed quickly by the Washington Redskins. The New England Patriots are sixth and the Giants are ninth, the only other NFL teams ranked ahead of the Jets on the Forbes list.
One thing the list proves is that the NFL knows how to do business. The future likely holds big gains for NFL franchises, with new television contracts and a long-term labor agreement in place.
For the Jets specifically, they are still looking at potential gains just in selling tickets. The team recently slashed some prices in the hopes of selling more seats at MetLife Stadium, and winning more games this season could also go a long way in that department.
