According to free agent running back Cedric Benson, several teams have indicated interest in signing him, including the New York Jets. Cedric Benson mentioned the interested teams in an interview on Sirius XM Radio, saying that the Jets, Green Bay Packers and Oakland Raiders have all checked in with him.
The New York Jets don't have a proven commodity in their backfield behind Shonn Greene. Some would even say that it's a stretch to call Greene a sure thing. Cedric Benson has rushed for over 1,000 yards each of the past three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, but is still without an NFL home as training camp draws near.
The Oakland Raiders are thought to be the front-runners to sign Cedric Benson, but there hasn't been any significant movement on their part so far. Benson is in a similar position to the one Plaxico Burress is currently in. He may have to wait by the phone until a training camp injury to force a team to give him a call.
On the Sirius XM Blitz, Cedric Benson got emotional about his desire to play. The lukewarm reception from NFL teams is probably due to him hitting the age of 30, when most running backs see their inevitable decline begin. Cedric Benson would be a nice fit in the Jets offense and would push Joe McKnight back to the third down back role where he is most effective.
It's unclear how the Jets feel about their backs behind Joe McKnight. They haven't seen a ton of Terrance Ganaway and Bilal Powell saw very limited action last season despite being a third round draft pick.
