JETS 101

The New York Jets announced a few small roster moves today, signing cornerback Devon Torrence and releasing fullback Fui Vakapuna and defensive back Tracy Wilson. Devon Torrence spent time with the Minnesota Vikings and Cincinnati Bengals last season, now entering his second year in the NFL out of Ohio State.

The New York Jets are staying busy with small roster tweaks early on in training camp, signing cornerback Devon Torrence one day after releasing cornerback Royce Adams. The Jets cut fullback Fui Vakapuna and safety Tracy Wilson. Fui Vakapuna signed with the Jets earlier this offseason and Tracy Wilson joined the Jets last year after he wasn't selected in the 2011 NFL Supplemental Draft.

The release of Tracy Wilson should be viewed as a positive sign. Tracy Wilson appeared in five games for the Jets last season as a reserve safety, and his release seems to indicate that the team is comfortable with their rookie safeties, Josh Bush and Antonio Allen. Josh Bush and Antonio Allen should be able to fill in on special teams and certain defensive packages, making them early contributors that the Jets were able to grab in the late rounds.

The waiving of Fui Vakapuna isn't much of a surprise. He has bounced around the league in his short NFL career and is a true fullback, which is becoming scarce on today's NFL rosters. For the Jets, that role is already filled by John Conner, which numbered Fui Vakapuna's days as a Jet the moment he signed.

Devon Torrence is worth a look as a reserve cornerback, a player who racked up a lot of starts at Ohio State and has some versatility to be used on special teams. He should still be viewed as a longshot considering the depth the Jets feature in the defensive backfield and his late addition to the roster, but he's not incapable of making a run at the 53-man roster.
