New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan updated the status of two injured wide receivers, Santonio Holmes and Jeremy Kerley, during his Monday morning press conference. Jeremy Kerley is still dealing with a hamstring issue and will miss today's practice. Santonio Holmes will also miss practice today, and although not a broken rib as was previously feared, he will most likely miss this Friday's Preseason Opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The New York Jets have suffered some tough injuries at wide receiver early in training camp, taking a hit at their top wide receiver spot and also at slot receiver. Jeremy Kerley has been hampered by a hamstring injury for most of training camp, a disappointing start to what many are thinking could be a breakout season for him. Santonio Holmes is hoping to redeem himself after all of the issues that plagued his 2011 season, but his rib/soft tissue injury will delay that.
Rex Ryan said that he is "concerned" about Jeremy Kerley's hamstring and also said that Santonio Holmes is "probably doubtful" for this week's preseason game versus the Cincinnati Bengals. It's not the start to training camp the Jets were hoping for with two of their top receivers dealing with nagging injuries, but so far training camp has been without any major injuries.
Rex Ryan noted that he doubts the Jets will do anything as far as picking up a veteran wide receiver at this point. It's still very early, and the starters will play very little this Friday. The Jets may as well take the opportunity to get a better look at some of the other wide receivers in camp, possibly giving them some first team reps, and making a more informed decision down the line.
Both Santonio Holmes and Jeremy Kerley were started practice in full pads for warm ups, but then proceeded to work off to the side with the "rehab group." Wayne Hunter was also working off to the side, not in full pads, and Austin Howard will get the first team reps today in practice.
