Antonio Cromartie is a special athlete, even when compared to the likes of the other elite athletes that populate NFL rosters, and the New York Jets might be looking to capitalize on it. Antonio Cromartie did have an opportunity on offense on a reverse last season and was used as a kick returner and one failed attempt at a punt return, but in 2012 his role in the Jets offense looks to be expanding.

Antonio Cromartie can surely bring one thing to the New York Jets offense that has been lacking: excitement. There's something electric about putting the ball in his hands, the sense that at any time he can break a huge play, which the Jets offensive players haven't been able to match. Antonio Cromartie is a homerun hitter with game-breaking speed.

Putting Antonio Cromartie on the field as a wide receiver would also create some matchup issues for the defense. The Jets have height and speed in Chaz Schilens and Stephen Hill, plus a true number one receiver in Santonio Holmes. Teams would have to put their top cornerback on Santonio Holmes, probably dedicate their second cornerback to Stephen Hill, and try to cover two tally, speedy threats in Chaz Schilens and Antonio Cromartie with nickel and dime corners or with safeties. At 6-2, 210 with excellent speed, Antonio Cromartie makes that a nightmare physical matchup for any defense.

The Jets have been very plain on offense so far, without a game plan or some of the different packages they will employ being used. Still, it seems apparent that to score points this season they will have to be extra creative on offense. Part of that will be Tim Tebow and the wildcat, but using Antonio Cromartie sparingly on offense could be another way to create opportunities to score.

Should we expect Antonio Cromartie to be a fixture on offense? No, probably not. But as a spot player used in packages to help stress the defense, Antonio Cromartie can serve a purpose and make the Jets offense better. Judging by what the Jets offense has shown so far, they should be very open to any help they can get.
