JETS 101

Despite that Austin Howard acquitted himself very well at right tackle Sunday night versus the Carolina Panthers, the New York Jets are apparently still looking to add another tackle for depth along the line. The Jets are looking to trade Wayne Hunter to the St. Louis Rams for the number two overall draft choice in the 2009 NFL Draft, tackle Jason Smith.

The first report of this trade came to light through Rich Cimini at ESPN New York. Jason Smith is listed at six-foot, five-inches and 308 pounds, playing football in college at Baylor, starting as a tight end in his freshman year, then made the move to offensive line for his sophomore season. Now, all Jets fans will rejoice when they read that the Jets gave up the embattled Wayne Hunter to receive Jason Smith. Former Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who holds the same position with St. Louis, must have been sort of conflicted in helping out his former club.

While the upside for the Jets is better, more consistent play at right tackle to help the ground and pound aspect of the offense, and hopefully better pass protection, there is a fairly big potential downside as well. Smith, in his rookie campaign, received a very serious concussion on November 22, 2009, which caused him to missed the rest of that season. He also lost his starting job recently, and took a pay cut earlier this year from $10 million a year to $4 million. So for the Jets Smith is likely to fill the same role Hunter had just held, which was sixth offensive lineman for jumbo formations, or first back-up in case of injury to either tackle.

Other than pending physicals by both players the rest of the details of this trade are unknown as yet, but as that information come to us we will, of course, pass it along to you.
