On Friday all NFL teams were required to cut down their rosters to the 53 player limit, and the Jets cut 22 players, notably three 2012 NFL Draft picks. After 12 noon Saturday the New York Jets decided to scour through the waiver wire for players they believed would help round out the roster more completely. Three new faces have joined the team: Isaako Aaitui, Clyde Gates and Konrad Reuland.
We can see the connection that Tony Sparano has to his former team, the Miami Dolphins, because they Jets made claims on defensive tackle Isaako Aaitui and wide receiver/kick returner Clyde Gates, both late of Miami. They also claimed tight end Konrad Reuland formerly with San Francisco. The first reports on these moves were by Rich Cimini at ESPN New York. Since three players were added, three more had to be cut/waived to make room, and they were: defensive end Marcus Dixon, safety Antonio Allen, and tight end Dedrick Epps. The Jets also lost running back Terrence Ganaway, who was claimed by the St. Louis Rams.
The main reason the Jets decided to add another wide receiver was because Gates also doubles as a kick returner. Last season as a rookie he averaged nearly 25 yards per return on 34 return attempts. Isaako Aaitui spent last season on the Dolphins practice squad, and is listed at 6-4 and 315 pounds, so like undrafted rookie Damon Harrison he will be a load to move around by opposing offensive lineman. Konrad Reuland is also 6-4, but weighs in at 260 pounds, and since has no experience, he will likely be the Jets designated blocking tight end, if he is active for any games.
The New York Jets have also announced that seven players have been signed back to be part of the practice squad: offensive tackle Paul Cornick, linebackers Marcus Dowtin and Ricky Sapp, cornerback Donnie Fletcher, wide receivers Royce Pollard and Jordan White, as well as tight end Hayden Smith. One spot remains which will likely be for Antonio Allen once he clears waivers. That would mean drafted rookie offensive lineman Robert Griffin would likely go elsewhere.
