On Monday they New York Jets made several roster moves including the re-signing of the longest tenured Jet, outside linebacker Bryan Thomas, as expected. They also brought back wide receiver Patrick Turner and released several players including for the second time in three weeks, defensive end Marcus Dixon.
The ACL tear to cornerback Darrelle Revis, which will end his 2012 season, will wind up freeing up a roster spot when the Jets inevitably will place Revis on season ending injured reserve. Besides bringing back Thomas after a weekend off, in which he would have sat out the game anyway, the Jets added back Patrick Turner. That move is in anticipation that rookie wide receiver Stephen Hill will be sitting this Sunday when the Jets battle the 49ers because Hill came up lame twice in the final quarter versus the Dolphins Sunday. The details of all transactions the Jets made today can be found here.
Cornerback Donnie Fletcher was also waived, but will likely be added back to practice squad. In addition to Fletcher, veteran defensive end Marcus Dixon was also waived again, and offensive tackle Dennis Landolt, who has not been active in these first three games was also finally let go. It is unclear if the Jets will bring back Dixon again, but we certainly hope so because he is a valuable contributor on the d-line. Having Landolt on the 53 man roster since the beginning of the season meant the Jets guaranteed his 2012 salary but was still very curious considering because of his knee injury he did not play at all in the preseason, and having him occupy a roster spot could've meant keeping someone else more valuable, like Terrance Ganaway, who was signed by the Rams.
There will likely be more moves in the coming days as the New York Jets should be looking to add another veteran cornerback that is available in free agency. One spot is available on the roster, and as stated, one more will be once Revis discusses being on injured reserve with head coach Rex Ryan.
