There will be a lot of old adages that are used for this game but the New York Jets pulled out an overtime 23-20 victory over the divisional rival Miami Dolphins. It was a particularly ugly win, especially with the word coming down on Monday that cornerback Darrelle Revis will be lost for the season with a torn ACL in his left knee.
The Jets received the opening kickoff and benefited from an early pass interference call on Nolan Carroll while covering Santonio Holmes to get an early first down. Unfortunately, Mark Sanchez threw an interception shortly after when trying to find Clyde Gates, who didn't flatten out his route properly. The Dolphins opened the scoring when Daniel Thomas ran it on a third and goal play. Richard Marshall would also be called for illegal contact while covering Holmes as it seemed yellow flags flew all day on pass attempts from Sanchez to Tone. Vlad Ducasse again saw time at left guard during Jets second drive of the first period and later in the fourth quarter.
Mark Sanchez was sacked by Jared Odrick that would end their drive that started in the first quarter. Bart Scott was called for an illegal contact penalty on a third down and three yard play where the Jets had stopped Miami, that kept a drive alive which would result in a Dan Carpenter 21 yard field goal, as the Jets defense stiffened on the goal line. After Sanchez connected with Holmes for 12 yards on a third and 15 yard play, the Jets used Tim Tebow as punt protector to run for the three yards needed to keep the drive alive. Sanchez spread the ball around to Holmes and then Jeff Cumberland for 20 yards, while mixing in runs with Bilal Powell. Sanchez had Stephen Hill in the end zone but Hill dropped the ball. Nick Folk connected from 33 yards to open their scoring, making it 10-3. Reggie Bush went down just before the half holding his left knee and did not return.
The defense started to help pick up the team, when LaRon Landry intercepted Ryan Tannehill's first pass of the second half and ran it in 18 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 10 apiece. On the very next offensive play for Miami, Thomas fumbled with Darrelle Revis recovering. Sanchez targeted Holmes for 14 yards and a first down on play action then a slant pass to put the Jets at first down and goal. Chris Clemons picked Sanchez in the end zone as Mark tried to put the ball somewhere between Jeff Cumberland and Stephen Hill. On two nearly consecutive plays, Mike DeVito went down with leg cramps, then Darrelle Revis left the game, and would not return, on a non-contact injury, hurting his left knee. Bart Scott got credit for a sack when Tannehill went down for three yard loss on a busted play. Dolphins full back Jorvorskie Lane put the Dolphins up 17-10 when he scored from one yard out near the end of the period. Sanchez got the Jets going again by hitting Jeremy Kerley for 66 yards to start their next drive.
The drive then became a comedy of errors when there was a false start penalty called on Matt Slauson. Then Mark Sanchez had pressure on him instantly and missed a wide open Cumberland in the end zone. Finally Sanchez tried to run for it on third and goal, ending up one yard shy. Nick Folk converted from 20 yards to cut the lead to 17-13. Antonio Cromartie went down holding his left arm when he was also called for pass interference covering Brian Hartline. Hartline was subsequently penalized for holding on Cro when he was blocking down field on a pass play. Dan Carpenter missed a 47-yard field goal attempt. After Kerley returned the punt 16 yards, Sanchez found Holmes for 14 yards along the sideline. Bilal Powel dropped a pass that would have been a sure first down. Miami went three and out. Sanchez hits\ Holmes for a first down at 35 yard line. A nice screen pass to Powell was negated by holding on Holmes then Chaz Schilens dropped a touchdown pass off his hands on a nice double move. Sanchez found Holmes for 15 yards and a first down then Shonn Greene bounced out to the left for nine more. Sanchez hit Kerley in stride for the touchdown to put the Jets ahead 20-17. Carpenter made a 41 yard field goal with under 30 seconds left to tie the game at 20.
Tim Tebow called heads and Jets won the toss. The Jets were forced to punt and Miami moved down the field, but Dan Carpenter missed again, this time from 48 yards, as it sailed left after Rex Ryan used a timeout to ice him. Sanchez hit Cumberland for seven yards then Holmes along the sideline this time for 38 yards. It set up Nick Folk from 33 yards, but the first attempt was blocked. It was luckily negated by a Miami timeout just before the play got off. Folk connected from 33 yards out to end the game, and the Jets improved their record to 2-1.
Well now the New York Jets, and all of their fans, will find out what life is like without Darrelle Revis on the field, and practically shutting out the best half of any teams opposing receivers. Kyle Wilson must step up and Mike Pettine will adjust the defensive schemes, but Tony Sparano must also kick start the offense into scoring more to help make up for the deficit on the other side of the ball.
