The New York Jets were able to score first against the New England Patriots on Sunday, and came back from 10 points down to go up by three, 26-23, but wound up not being able to finish and lost to the Patriots in overtime 29-26. Next week they will look to rebound at home against the Dolphins, but let's look back at the competitive game Gang Green had against their arch rivals.

First Quarter:

After the Jets were able to stop the Patriots and force a punt, they started to march down the field on the arm of Mark Sanchez. Jeremy Kerley caught two balls on nearly consecutive plays, the first 23 yards, then 27 more along the sideline. A defensive holding call on a pass to Dustin Keller put the Jets at the Patriots 12 yard line. Tim Tebow ran it on third down to put the Jets at first and goal on the one. Shonn Greene ran it in from there to put Gang Green up 7-0. Unfortunately the Jets gave it right back as Devin McCourty took the subsequent kickoff 104 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at seven. Jeff Cumberland was injured on a third down pass play on the next series, went to locker room and did not return. The Patriots drove down and Tom Brady found Ron Gronkowski for the go ahead score. Joe McKnight returned the kickoff 41 yards. Greene caught as pass from Sanchez that was three yards short of first down, Greene fumbled, but Konrad Reuland was johnny-on-the-spot to recover for Jets.

Second Quarter:

With the Jets deep in there own territory after an exchange of punts, Greene never got the handoff clean from Sanchez as Vince Wilfork was in the backfield, the ball went backwards and Sanchez alertly kicked it out of the end zone for the safety. Quinton Coples and David Harris combined on a sack of Brady on next series. When the Jets got the ball back, Sanchez connected with his hot hand, Kerley for six yards, then Greene for eight to get the first down. Kerley made a wonderful concentration catch on a tipped ball for 22 yards. Keller got 10 yards and a first down, five yards after the catch. Alfonso Dennard intercepted Sanchez as he tried to throw to Stephen Hill near the goal line. Greene was wide open in the flat to the right on the play. After the Jets forced the Patriots to punt, rookie Antonio Allen was called for facemask penalty on Danny Woodhead that gave the Pats a first down. The Jets would still hold, with Mark Sanchez then finding Greene for eight plus yards, then Keller for 15 yards. Sanchez found Greene again for six yards, Hilliard for nine then Greene again for five. Shonn Greene got almost five more, then ran the just under one yard needed for the first down. Jonathan Grimes caught his first ball for three yards. Nick Folk connected from 54 yards to cut the lead to 16-10 at half.

Third Quarter:

The Jets had deferred from the coin toss and received the second half kickoff driving down the field, with Sanchez finding Stephen Hill for 12 yards and a first down. Two plays later he found Keller for nine and another first down. Shonn Greene ran on three straight plays, four yards, then five-plus, then less than one for yet another first down. Austin Howard went out and returned after being out one play. Sanchez found Keller on play action to get the Jets down to the Pats 11 yard line. Greene ran for five-plus then three, and the Jets could get first and goal at one. Tebow could have been used to run it in, but they wound up having Folk connect for a chip shot 21-yard field goal. Demario Davis, who was used extensively due to his speed, blew up Ridley on a second down play for a loss. A pass to Aaron Hernandez was stripped by Antonio Cromartie at the one yard line, but the call was reversed upon review as Hernandez arm was ruled down before ball came out. Brady found Gronk for touchdown on third down. Jets were down now 10, 23-13.

Fourth Quarter:

Isaiah Trufant was playing nickel corner almost all game, and blew up consecutive plays, including dropping former Jet Danny Woodhead for a loss. When the Jets got the ball back, Sanchez connected again with Stephen Hill for a first down, then on a slant play for seven yards. Then Keller was targeted along sideline for 19 yards. Shonn Greene made a catch for a few yards gain, and Spikes hit him hard, leaving Greene shaken up and off to the locker room until overtime. Lex Hilliard got eight yards and another first down, then Hill again for 15 yards. Mark Sanchez was sacked with Konrad Reuland open on the play. Keller got six yards, then Kerley the next pass to give the Jets another drive continuing first down. Joe McKnight ran for five yards, then Sanchez zipped a laser to Dustin Keller for the touchdown. Cromartie had a nice pass defended on Gronkowski were he would have picked Brady had Gronk not gotten a hand in late. The Jets would hold and get the ball back, as the drive would start with Sanchez finding Keller for 21 yards along sideline. McKnight ran hard for 13 yards, then five more, then Grimes got one. Stephen Hill would then drop a sure first down catch when he looked to run before securing the ball. Nick Folk connected from 43 yards to tie the game at 23. On the subsequent kickoff, Hilliard hit McCourty who fumbled and Antonio Allen recovered. Dont'a Hightower sacked Sanchez and move them back. Folk connected again from 43 yards to give Jets the lead. The Patriots drove and Gostkowski also connected from 43 yard to tie the game as time expired.

Overtime:

The Jets lost the coin toss as Mike DeVito called tails and it was heads. The Patriots drove down the field and Stephen Gostkowski hit a 48-yard field goal, but that did not end the overtime. Shonn Greene returned and the Jets benefited from a defensive holding call to get a first down. Then Kerley was targeted along sideline for 17 yards. The game ended when Austin Howard gave up sack of Sanchez by Ninkovich who jarred the ball from Sanchez and recovered it himself.

The New York Jets dropped to 3-4, though now 2-1 in the division, and this coming Sunday they will be at home versus Miami. The momentum created by there overall fairly solid play will hopefully lead to another victory before their bye week following the Dolphins game, and can keep that going in the second half of the season.
