New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum always makes a lot of minor moves throughout the season, shuffling the fringe players on the roster with practice squad players and the best he can find amongst the lot of the free agents. While releasing Antonio Allen to sign Jason Hill once again seems to fall in that category, we have to question the move. Antonio Allen has played well in limited playing time and the Jets have had some wide receivers step up recently. The Jets also signed guard Hayworth Hicks off of the Indianapolis Colts practice squad.

The move by the New York Jets to drop Antonio Allen and pickup Jason Hill is a weird one. The Jets actually benefited from a nice performance by Clyde Gates in the loss to the Miami Dolphins, as Clyde Gates was the team's leading receiver with seven catches for 82 yards. If he can keep playing well, Gates should combine with Stephen Hill, Jeremy Kerley and Chaz Schilens to give the Jets a pretty solid top four at wide receiver, plus tight end Dustin Keller as another receiving threat. Are the Jets really desperate to have Jason Hill on the roster?

The other part of the move is Antonio Allen. Antonio Allen has seen limited playing time in three games but has recorded two tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. Is a team with an injury prone LaRon Landry and an aging Yeremiah Bell at safety really in a position to cut a promising young safety that it already used a draft pick on? There is speculation that this means Eric Smith is ready to return, but Smith has dealt with multiple injuries over the past few seasons as well. Now the Jets have to hope Antonio Allen clears waivers so he can be added to the practice squad again.

We actually picked out Antonio Allen as someone who deserved more playing time after the bye week. Looks like that won't be happening.

The Jets have also added guard Hayworth Hicks from the Indianapolis Colts practice squad. Hicks will be the 10th offensive lineman on the 53-man roster.
