Late on Tuesday the New York Jets had a flurry of roster activity. After working out two running backs earlier in the day they signed former Chicago Bear Kahlil Bell, to give them another healthy back with Bilal Powell suffering a concussion and Joe McKnight still recovering from an ankle sprain. A roster spot was made available when the Jets released linebacker Aaron Maybin.

The release of outside linebacker Aaron Maybin marks the end of his career resurrection with the New York Jets when he was signed last season and wound up being the best edge rusher they had, recording six sacks and many quarterback hurries. Maybin was inactive this past Sunday in Seattle and has seen his playing time reduced dramatically all year. He had added some weight via muscle in the offseason in hopes of gaining more playing time in other than just pass rush situations, but apparently wound up losing a step or two and more playing time went to rookie Demario Davis and others. Maybin had not registered a sack thus far in 2012, and the Jets will be looking to recently elevated Ricky Sapp to generate the pass rush needed with Maybin gone.

Also on Tuesday, the Jets worked out running backs Steve Slaton and Kahlil Bell, deciding on signing Bell to add depth behind Shonn Greene, as both Bilal Powell and Joe McKnight are recovering from injuries. Bell is only 25 years old, and was with Chicago for three years, gaining 589 yards with a 4.5 yard average. He should give the Jets a runner with speed who can find holes and gain more yards downfield after hitting those holes, since Greene is their power back. One other move that was made on Tuesday, announced later in the evening by the team, cornerback Isaiah Trufant will be placed on injured reserve after injuring his knee early in the Seattle game on special teams. They will likely elevate Donnie Fletcher from the practice squad to replace him.

Well it remains to be seen if the Jets can right their ship and put together a solid game plan to not only win this Sunday in St. Louis, but pretty much every remaining game if the still have hopes of making the playoffs. Otherwise they might as well start seeing how many of their rookies and younger players will fare with increased playing time, and start to shape the roster for 2013.
