New York Jets Versus Jacksonville Jaguars: Time for the Offense to Step Up

The New York Jets are sitting at 5-7 on the season, and it's fair to say they have ridden their defense to that record. What has held them back is a stagnant, sometimes self-destructive offense that doesn't put up points and tends to turn the ball over, a dangerous combination. Last week, the Jets did face a tough Arizona Cardinals defense. That doesn't excuse the dreadful performance they put together, but this week they will be expected to perform much better against a weaker Jacksonville Jaguars defense.

The New York Jets are dealing with uncertainty at the quarterback position, with many questioning the decision to start Mark Sanchez and with the status of Tim Tebow still up in the air. Many Jets fans could care less about those two, more interested in the status of Greg McElroy. If Mark Sanchez struggles once again, expect to see Greg McElroy in the game.

The Jacksonville Jaguars enter the game with the 31st ranked defense in the NFL, surrendering over 400 yards per game. The Jags are giving up 260 of those yards through the air, the other 144 on the ground. That ranks them 26th against the pass and 31st against the run. The Jets enter the game as the 12th best rushing team in the NFL, with the 28th ranked passing attack.

A lot of rankings, but what does it all mean? Expect the Jets to stick with the approach they have used all season: pound the rock on the ground and hope Mark Sanchez doesn't throw the game away. If he does start throwing the game out the window, expect Rex Ryan to have a short leash and turn to Greg McElroy to right the ship once again.

Facing the worst offense in the NFL, the Jets defense can be expected to have another good day on Sunday. However, they shouldn't be forced to have a lights out performance. For once, it's time for the offense to shoulder the load. Expect big days from Shonn Greene and Bilal Powell.
