The New York Jets have finally made a move at the quarterback position, benching Mark Sanchez for this week's game at MetLife Stadium against the San Diego Chargers in favor of Greg McElroy. It's too little too late for their playoff hopes, but at least fans now have a reason to watch these final two games in the second straight failed season for Rex Ryan and the Jets. Of course, it wouldn't be the Jets if some didn't still throw the name Tim Tebow out there, wondering why he isn't the starter.

The New York Jets will miss the playoffs this season because their offense couldn't contain itself. The Jets didn't need their offense to light up the scoreboard this season, they just needed to not turn the ball over and put together some semblance of a competent performance. At times the Jets didn't even need complete drives, just the ability to capitalize on short field provided by the defense and special teams. The failure of the offense to do even that has a lot to do with the struggles of Mark Sanchez at the quarterback position. That has caused some major frustration from the Jets faithful, and Mark Sanchez was the target of some death threats on Twitter.

The insertion of Greg McElroy into the lineup comes after the Jets have already been eliminated from the playoffs, and will truly be bittersweet if he plays well and wins these last two games. That would leave Jets fans wondering what could have been if Rex Ryan had pulled the trigger after Greg McElroy led the team to a comeback win over the Arizona Cardinals at MetLife Stadium.

Instead, Rex Ryan chose to stick with Mark Sanchez. Sanchez limped to a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, then almost single-handedly torched the Jets' postseason chances with four interceptions and a lost fumble against the Tennessee Titans last night. Late in the fourth quarter Mark Sanchez was part of two awful turnovers: an interception thrown in the middle of three Titans and a botched shotgun snap after the defense and special teams gave the Jets one final shot with the ball at the Tennessee 25 yard line with 47 seconds left in the game.

The Jets will likely give Tim Tebow some role in this week's game. The decision to start Greg McElroy really underscores how the Jets feel about Tim Tebow as a potential starting quarterback – it's clear they don't view him as one. Expect Tim Tebow to see some spot duty throughout the game.

If that does happen, will Mark Sanchez be inactive? If so, one of the lasting images of the Jets 2012 season, and Mark Sanchez's NFL career, could be him in street clothes filling out the offensive charts with Greg McElroy and Tim Tebow in full gear.
