The New York Jets are saddled with salary cap issues heading into this offseason, while also in need of some major upgrades throughout the roster. To make strides towards solving both of those issues, the Jets are expected to cut some veterans that have been familiar faces around Florham Park and at MetLife Stadium but are no longer worth the price tag attached. Among those expected to be cut are Bart Scott, Calvin Pace, Eric Smith and Jason Smith. Rich Cimini of ESPN New York first reported the expected moves.
The New York Jets are expected to cut some pricey veterans to clear salary cap space and allow their new general manager to begin filling the holes on the roster. In total, the Jets will open up about $30.7 million in cap space by cutting Bart Scott ($7.15 million), Calvin Pace ($8.56 million), Eric Smith ($3 million) and Jason Smith ($12 million). With the exception of Jason Smith, these players each spent at least four seasons in green and white.
Bart Scott and Calvin Pace simply aren't the same players they have been in the past. The Jets need an injection of youth into their linebacking corps, likely to be provided by Demario Davis inside as the replacement for Bart Scott. Calvin Pace had just three sacks this season, his lowest total since 2006. Bart Scott showed some flashes of his old self throughout the season but recorded only 60 tackles after topping 80 tackles in the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
Eric Smith has spent his entire seven-year career with the Jets after being drafted by the team in the third round of the 2006 NFL Draft. A smart, tough player, Eric Smith played an important role for Mike Westhoff on special teams and contributed defensively despite being exposed at times for a lack of speed. His shining moment had to be the 2010 playoffs, when he led the team in tackles as the Jets made a run to the AFC Championship Game.
Jason Smith was traded to the Jets this year by the St. Louis Rams in exchange for Wayne Hunter. It was two teams swapping players that were huge disappointments. The Jets used Jason Smith as a very expensive extra lineman in jumbo sets this season.
