New York Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine will interview with the Buffalo Bills for their defensive coordinator position. The Bills requested permission from the Jets to speak with Mike Pettine and the Jets have granted that request. Even though Mike Pettine declined an extension from the Jets, his contract runs through February and permission was needed.
New York Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine will interview with the Buffalo Bills for the same position on their staff. The Bills recently hired Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone to take over their head coaching position, succeeding Chan Gailey. Mike Pettine was involved in some rumors after last season regarding other jobs but decided to stay on with the Jets.
At the end of this past season, Mike Pettine declined an extension offer from the Jets. It does seem to be time for him to move on and make his own name, as any defensive accomplishments with the Jets are mostly attributed to Rex Ryan. While it seems like a lateral move, Mike pettine would also likely have more freedom with the Bills. For the Jets, it doesn't make a lot of sense to have an expensive defensive coordinator when Rex Ryan is so heavily involved in the defense.
Dennis Thurman, currently the defensive backs coach, could potentially be promoted to defensive coordinator.
