Loading ...The New York Jets are moving on from Mike Pettine quickly, having reportedly promoted defensive backs coach Dennis Thurman to defensive coordinator. Mike Pettine declined an extension offer from the Jets towards the end of the season and the Jets have granted permission to the Buffalo Bills to interview him for their open defensive coordinator position. Rex Ryan mentioned at today's press conference that the Jets had some worthy internal candidates for the position.
The New York Jets will hire within for their vacant defensive coordinator position, left open by the departing Mike Pettine. Defensive backs coach Dennis Thurman will be elevated to defensive coordinator, as always with plenty of input from head coach Rex Ryan. Dennis Thurman joined the Jets coaching staff in 2008 after spending 2002-2007 with the Baltimore Ravens.
Multiple players in the Jets secondary have made great strides while playing for Dennis Thurman. The promotion is well-deserved.
An 11th round selection in the 1978 NFL Draft, Dennis Thurman spent nine seasons in the NFL after an exceptional collegiate career at USC. He played for the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals before he began coaching in 1988. In 1993 he returned to USC as the defensive backs coach, coaching All-Pro safety Troy Polamalu of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
