The New York Jets appear to finally be getting close to making a hire for their vacant general manager position. Of course, we have heard this before, with a false report that surfaced claiming that the Jets were finalizing a contract with Tom Gamble of the San Francisco 49ers. Tom Gamble is no longer in the running for the job (perhaps Rex Ryan's tattoo had something to do with that), as three reported finalists are Jerry Angelo, Omar Khan and Scott Cohen. Jerry Angelo is the former Chicago Bears general manager, Omar Khan is the Director of Business and Football Administration for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Scott Cohen is the Jets assistant general manager.
The New York Jets have scheduled second interviews with Jerry Angelo, Omar Khan and Scott Cohen for their open general manager position. It is not known if any other interviews will be scheduled, but the Jets are expected to name a new general manager this week. It has been a lengthy process for the Jets in their search for a new general manager. The Jets have moved on from their original candidates, seeing some hired elsewhere (David Caldwell with the Jacksonville Jaguars) and seeing others fall off the league's radar (Tom Gamble of the San Francisco 49ers).
Once the Jets do finally hire a general manager, he will have plenty of work to do. The Jets will be looking for a new offensive coordinator and have had a whole host of defections from their coaching staff. Once that's settled, the Jets will need to address their salary cap situation. Some of the moves are obvious (cutting Bart Scott, Calvin Pace, Eric Smith and Jason Smith), but there are plenty of tough decisions to be made. And that's before even thinking about addressing the quarterback situation.
First things first, let's hope the Jets can lock up a new general manager this week. Jerry Angelo is said to be the favorite at this point.
