Alex Smith will request his release from the San Francisco 49ers, apparently resigned to the fact that Colin Kaepernick in going to be the starting quarterback for Jim Harbaugh moving forward. It has to be tough to swallow for Alex Smith, who will stand on the sideline after taking the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game last season, watching Colin Kaepernick direct the offense in the Super Bowl this season. The New York Jets are in the market for a cheap quarterback that can lead a competent offense, and Alex Smith might fit the bill.

The New York Jets are in a tough situation at quarterback, but if (when) Alex Smith gets his release from the San Francisco 49ers there will be another available option for them to pursue. Alex Smith has dealt with some ups and downs throughout his career, but he led the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game last season and was playing well this season before a concussion opened the door for Colin Kaepernick.

Whether Alex Smith is the right fit for the Jets is up for debate and will depend on what direction Marty Mornhinweg wants to take the offense this season. We know that Marty Mornhinweg likes to employ his own version of the West Coast offense, but he will need to mold his philosophy around the available talent, at least for a season or two.

Of course, Mark Sanchez will be given an opportunity to compete for the job. He will be on the roster and any quarterback that accepts an offer from the Jets will understand that. Depending on their confidence level and what they think about Mark Sanchez, that may or may not be a deterrent to someone looking to start.

Expect the 49ers to grant Alex Smith his release soon after the start of free agency. The Jets will be making their own cuts, then will quickly get to work on scouring the market for a quarterback to compete with Mark Sanchez. Alex Smith will be one of the quarterbacks they check out.
