New York Jets Position Preview: Quarterback

Even though the New York Jets 2017 season already looks doomed, one headline that will consistently grab our attention is the quarterback situation.

Going into training camp, Jets head coach Todd Bowles described the situation as an “open, three-way competition” for the starting job.

The team signed 38-year old journeyman quarterback Josh McCown to a one-year, $6 Million deal this offseason with the assumption that he would be the likeliest to start at quarterback until either Bryce Petty or Christian HackenbergĀ have proven themselves ready to compete at a high level.

That was a smart move by the Jets front office. Many people have thrown around the term “bridge-quarterback” when describing Josh’s situation with the team since there really is no long term future for him with the team. He was brought in to be a serviceable starter and mentor the younger quarterbacks eventually helping them grow into a position in which they can take the starting job away from him.

After time in training camp, things have progressed just about as we expected. People are upset that Hackenberg isn’t getting more reps with the first team …
